Meet the ‘Head of State’: Mwiza Sambo
As the buildup to the August Reggae Fest intensifies, the curiosity to know who will perform and which band will back the performers is growing too. Of particular interest is one name which, by street statistics, is perhaps less talked of and less heard about. This name happens to be of the ‘head of state’: Mwiza Sambo. It might not have been getting the mentions but there is a reason it is lined up to perform at the big Reggae event. It is deserving.
Mwiza Sambo is a Malawian Reggae Dancehall artist who was born in Blantyre. He is a brother to the legendary Malawian gospel artist Peter Sambo. Growing up and seeing his brother do music inspired him to become a great artist he is today.
His involvement in music dates back to when he was just 15 years old. In 2008, he formed a group called ‘Jobless together’ with Ishmael Dapalapa, Khumbo Hango and Allan Mangani and started recording that same year at Tikhu Studios in Luwinga, Mzuzu. That year, he recorded and released his first song titled ‘Good Loving’ which featured Meonz. He then moved to South Africa in 2011 to look for greener pastures. While there, he literally stopped doing music as his focus was on making money for a better livelihood.
Later, as it would happen, Mwiza became friends with a music producer, Sithe, and his interest in music resurfaced. In 2018, he released a single ‘Made to Be’ followed by an EP titled ‘Back Home’. He then released his first album in 2019 titled ‘Lemon and Herbs’. The album is available on various digital platforms including Deezer, Spotify and YouTube.
Mwiza confided in Reggae265.com that before starting to do Reggae music he used to do different kinds of genres in the process of trying to find balance but finally decided to concentrate on Reggae as it allows him to teach, inform and educate mankind on issues concerning life. His other brother, Sunday Sambo, is the one who introduced him to Reggae. Since then, he has always wanted to do positive and conscious music and Reggae provides him with such a platform.
He works under Overstay Entertainment and Baobab Entertainment. The Home Coming EP and Lemon N Herbs Album were released under Overstay Entertainment. The recent Head of State MIXTAPE is a product released under Overstay Entertainment. He has contributed 2 songs on an upcoming album titled Revolution Volume 1 which is going to be released on various digital platforms on the 27th of August under Baobab Entertainment.
Be sure to look out for his set at the August Reggae Fest. His latest mixtape, the Head of State Vol 1, is available on https://reggae265.com/mwiza-sambo-head-of-state/.
